People are addicted to power, sex, money, or almost any sort of pleasurable things in this world. Why is there an addiction? Let’s look at the nature of addiction. It is repetitive, chronic, lasting, and sometimes endless. And that exactly is the nature of addiction which makes it hard to quit from. A lot of therapies are being done to solve that but after few days, months, or years the same issue or problem keeps coming back.
How can a religious persons like a priest afford to be a sex addict from his teenage life up to his adulthood or priestly life; or a pastor to be a pedophile even when he’s already preaching?
Why is Muammar Muhammad al-Gaddafi so addicted to power and wants it to last forever?
Or why do have internet or computer addicts, or religious addicts who are very much addicted to listening to inspirational speeches, great preaching, or spiritual activities but are not spiritual in their actions?
Let’s examine closely the nature of addiction. Addiction is lasting and sometimes endless and people find it pleasurable. Is it but our nature as human beings to seek pleasure? Yes as a matter of fact our ultimate goal in life is happiness.
The reason why we cannot free ourselves from the bondage of addiction is that same goal to be happy. We long to be happy but are not satisfied. We long to fulfill the empty space in our heart and in our mind to be totally happy but we are never satisfied. What can satisfy that longing for happiness is nothing else but love. But the love of God is ultimately the solution of all our addictions because God’s love is the highest form of love and it is the only love that can satisfy our endless longing for happiness. You can go from one place to another and seek for happiness but you can never be satisfied until you find the highest form of happiness in the love of God.
In John 3:16: For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whoever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life.
Father God, we pray that we may see and feel the endless love of your son Jesus so that we may never resort to our various forms of addiction to seek other forms happiness but in you alone.

Can you guess what?
It is the love of God. God’s love satisfies everything. The moment you feel it and become filled with it you will no longer long for any other thing but His love. His love has well been manifested since creation. However, God the Father wanted to make it more concrete by sending His only Son to redeem us from sinfulness. There is no greater love than to lay down his life for a friend (Jn 15:13). Jesus did lay down his life for us. It’s such a powerful love that it can completely change your life and end all your addictions and consequently make your life better. There is no other thing that can ever satisfy your life than his love because it gives you ultimate happiness which is but the desire of every heart. If your heart is wise enough, then it will soon realize that it is God’s love that your heart is actually longing for.
God bless your life with God’s love. May your life be continually blessed by his love.
